rance’s doors remain open for thousands of competent and talented Filipino workers, including nurses and information technology professionals, even as French officials renewed their appeal to the Philippine government to sign an immigration agreement with France, Europe’s tourism capital.

French Ambassador Gérard Chesnel said his government has softened its immigration policy to welcome foreign workers, refuting claims that France would close its doors to Filipino workers following the European Parliament’s adoption of the draft directive on the return of illegal migrants last June 18.

“On the contrary, we open the doors more widely enough. We would like to have more Filipinos in France. The only condition is you come legally,” the French ambassador said in an interview.

He said the European Union’s new immigration directive expected to be adopted in late September or early October seeks to encourage legal migration.

The Philippines is the largest source of migrants to Europe. Within the European Union (EU), the biggest number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is in the United Kingdom, numbering 203,000; followed by Italy with 120,000; Germany, 54,000; France, 47,000; and Spain, 41,000. The information came from the Commission on Filipinos Overseas following a survey it conducted last December.

Chesnel said French authorities are still awaiting the response of the Philippine government on the proposed agreement, which aims to address Paris’ labor market needs.

“We’re still waiting the answer from the Philippine government. But it is not necessary to sign this agreement to put in force this new policy. We are trying to sign such agreement with few countries, including the Philippines,” he said.

Even if the immigration agreement is not signed, Chesnel said, this doesn’t prevent French authorities from issuing “competence” cards to professional Filipino workers who wish to work in France.

Everyone know that this ferry sink many days ago. When they heard the news that the company will bring back or re-float the ships too many disagreed. They want it to be there forever.

I know they are still hurt due to tragedy. Well my comment is for them not to judge the ship itself. I have ride many times with this ship and it is for me the best ferry in the Philippines. My suggestion is let us not punish the Princess of the Stars but rather the captain of the ship. Why, well i am a driver and I decide what to do with my vehicle. It is all my call. Therefore it is not my vehicle that should be punish if i got the accident. I hope everyone agree with it.
